Is Cannabis Legal in Maine?

Adult use

Answer

Maine has legalized both medical and recreational marijuana possession and sales.

Background

On November 2, 1999, Maine legalized medical marijuana when 62% of the populace voted yes on Question 2.

On November 8, 2016 Maine voters approved Question 1 to have legalized the recreational use, retail sale and taxation of marijuana, also referred to as adult use marijuana. The law was enacted as IB 2015, c. 5, “An Act to  Legalize Marijuana.”

Why this is important

Whether a state has medical or recreational cannabis use and sale allowed is important to any current or prospective cannabis business owner because the status of the cannabis regulations largely impacts the business's consumer base.  Once a state allows recreational (adult use) cannabis, the potential consumer base explodes to include any adult over 21+.  Maine doesn't get much play on the cannabis news circuit and is one of the quieter recreational states.
