Dispensary: Age Verification Plan DIY Guide

Purpose

The Age Verification Plan is intended to ensure that your dispensary has a plan to thoroughly check the age of every customer that enters the facility.  This is a more in-depth process than just having front desk agents check IDs.  There must be training of employees specifically on checking IDs, equipment to check the authenticity of the IDs, and an understanding of what every state’s ID looks like (if your dispensary will be accepting out of state customers).

Use Cases

This plan can be used on its own if you are an operator or if the license application requests an age verification plan as its own section or exhibit.

The Age Verification Plan can also be added to any other plan such as the Operating Plan if it fits within the page limit.  In the case that combining two plans might exceed the application’s required page limit, then you may also select key portions of this [plan to add to another plan.

Keywords

Search for each of these terms in the regulations. You're looking for pieces of each regulation that pertain to age requirements.  Refer to the General Sheet Editing DIY Guide for guidance on what to do with these key words.

  • Required age
  • Age requirement
  • Verify age
  • Age
  • Verification
  • ID or I.D.
  • Identification
  • Government issued
  • Any other words you can think of (if any) that have to do with age verification processes.

Replace All

Search for each of the bolded terms in the Age Verification Plan sheet, including the brackets. Do a "replace all" and insert the pertinent information needed to replace the term.  The description underneath each bolded term below tells you what information should replace the bolded term. For instance, you would use the search feature in your document editing software to look for [Company *1] and then using the replace all feature, replace [Company *1] with your company name.

[Company *1]

Replace with the name of the company.

[State *1]

Replace with the name of the state where the company is located

[Regulatory Authority *1].

Replace with the name of the State cannabis regulatory authority (usually a department name or a board name).

[Required Age *1]

Replace with the required age for medical marijuana patients

[Required Age *2]

Replace [Required Age *2] with required age for adult use marijuana. If your state does not yet have adult use cannabis, delete the sentence where it appears throughout the sheet "and [Required Age *2] for adult use marijuana]"

Suggested Customizations

We suggest that you read through the sheet and make any additional edits or additions that you see fit. The Age Verification Plan includes policies and procedures which you can add further detail to if you have additional steps to your policies and procedures. To get you started, some items to look up and edit to further customize this sheet include:

General Manager

Replace with the role title of the person responsible for ensuring all customer identification and registration documents are current and documented in the customer record in the POS, if it's a role other than General Manager (ex: Compliance Director, Manager, Human Resources Manager)

Chief Operating Officer (“COO”)

Insert role title of person who is responsible for POS compliance and the maintenance of all customer sales records, if it's a role other than COO (ex: General Manager, Compliance Director)

5 years

Your state may have a specific requirement for number of years that records must be kept.  check the state regulation and if the state requires record keeping for more than 5 years, insert that number here.

Rename

Remember to rename the plan to match the name that the application uses (ex: the application may require a "Customer Identification"plan, in which case you would change the name of the Age Verification plan to CustomerIdentification using whatever document naming convention required by the application).
